Background of the Study
Agricultural education plays a critical role in equipping students with the knowledge and skills required to address modern farming challenges. In Minna, Niger State, traditional agricultural teaching methods often fail to fully engage students or illustrate the dynamic nature of agricultural practices. Augmented Reality (AR) offers an innovative solution by overlaying digital information onto real-world agricultural settings, thereby providing interactive and immersive learning experiences (Adebayo, 2023). An AR-based learning tool can simulate various farming techniques, crop growth cycles, and pest management strategies, allowing students to visualize and interact with virtual models in a real environment. This technology facilitates experiential learning by enabling users to observe the impact of different farming practices without the need for physical resources. Moreover, AR can present complex agricultural data in an accessible format, fostering a deeper understanding of soil science, irrigation techniques, and sustainable farming practices (Olu, 2024). The interactive nature of AR also encourages collaborative learning, as students can work together to analyze virtual scenarios and devise innovative solutions to agricultural problems. As the agricultural sector faces increasing pressure from climate change and population growth, there is a pressing need to enhance agricultural education with modern technological tools. This study aims to design an AR-based learning tool specifically tailored for agricultural education in Minna. It will evaluate how this tool impacts student engagement, knowledge retention, and practical skill development. By integrating AR into the curriculum, educational institutions in Niger State can bridge the gap between theory and practice, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and productive agricultural sector (Chinwe, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Traditional agricultural education in Minna often relies on textbook-based instruction and limited field demonstrations, which do not adequately prepare students for the complexities of modern farming. This traditional approach results in a gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, leaving students underprepared for real-world agricultural challenges (Ibrahim, 2023). Furthermore, the static nature of conventional teaching methods can lead to disengagement and reduced retention of critical information. Although Augmented Reality presents a promising alternative, its use in agricultural education is still limited due to factors such as high development costs, lack of technical expertise, and resistance to adopting new methodologies. This study seeks to address these challenges by designing an AR-based learning tool that can provide an interactive and immersive educational experience. The tool aims to simulate various agricultural scenarios, offering students the opportunity to experiment with different techniques in a risk-free environment. By providing real-time visualizations and interactive modules, the AR tool can enhance understanding and foster innovation among learners. The research will investigate the impact of this technology on student performance and engagement, comparing outcomes with those achieved through traditional methods. Ultimately, the study aims to offer practical recommendations for integrating AR into agricultural curricula, ensuring that students acquire the skills necessary to meet the demands of modern agriculture (Udo, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To design an AR-based learning tool for agricultural education.

  2. To evaluate its impact on student engagement and knowledge retention.

  3. To identify challenges and propose strategies for effective implementation.

Research Questions:

  1. How does an AR-based tool improve the understanding of agricultural practices?

  2. What impact does AR have on student engagement and practical skills?

  3. What challenges are associated with integrating AR into agricultural education, and how can they be addressed?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it investigates the application of AR technology in agricultural education in Minna, aiming to enhance student learning and practical skills. The findings will provide valuable insights for educators and policymakers on integrating innovative digital tools into agricultural curricula, ultimately promoting sustainable farming practices and boosting the productivity of the agricultural sector.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to the design and evaluation of an AR-based learning tool for agricultural education in Minna, Niger State, and does not extend to other educational fields or regions.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Augmented Reality (AR): A technology that overlays digital information onto the physical world to create interactive experiences.

  2. Agricultural Education: The teaching and learning of farming practices and agricultural sciences.

  3. Immersive Learning: A method of education that engages multiple senses through interactive and realistic simulations.
